It's 2019, and I'm sitting in a Bali café, surrounded by digital nomads, all of us hunched over laptops chasing the "laptop lifestyle" dream.

I've just left my stable job at Shopify. I've built several businesses, taught hundreds of entrepreneurs, and generated impressive results. On paper, I have expertise worth sharing.

But as I stare at my blank content calendar, I feel completely lost.

"What's your niche?" a fellow creator asks casually.

That simple question sends me spiraling. I have experience in e-commerce, operations, team building, content creation... I've launched physical products, built communities, scaled businesses across different industries.

"I'm still figuring that out," I mumble, feeling like an impostor.

Later that night, I scroll through Instagram, watching creators with far less experience confidently claiming their territory. Their profiles scream clarity: "The Facebook Ads Guy" or "Your Productivity Coach."

Meanwhile, I'm paralyzed by the unspoken rule that success means picking one tiny slice of expertise and abandoning everything else that makes me... me.

I try forcing myself into various niches: e-commerce expert, operations specialist, remote team builder. Each feels incomplete, like I'm hiding parts of myself to fit into a pre-defined box.

My content falls flat. My offers don't convert. Despite my track record, I feel invisible.

This struggle—this feeling of being both everything and nothing in the market—ultimately led me to my biggest revelation:

You don't find your niche. You create it.

After building multiple 7 and 8-figure businesses across different industries, I've discovered something revolutionary: traditional niche advice is fundamentally flawed. It's keeping the vast majority of creators trapped in cycles of confusion, frustration, and disappointment.

The niche crisis

Let's face it:

  • You've created content you truly believed in that barely got noticed
  • You've felt invisible in crowded markets despite having valuable insights
  • You've launched offers that didn't connect with your audience the way you hoped
  • You've struggled to articulate what makes you different from everyone else

I've seen this firsthand. One of my clients, Sarah, had deep expertise in both nutrition and mindfulness. She spent months trying to choose between being a "nutrition coach" or a "mindfulness teacher," paralyzed by conventional advice to pick just one lane. Her content felt generic, her messaging confused, and her offers stagnated—until she learned to combine her expertise into a unique category she owned.

You're not alone. Most creators are trapped in "niche limbo" - that painful space between knowing you need a clear position and feeling completely lost about how to create one.

The consequences are brutal:

  • Perpetual struggle to gain traction
  • The soul-crushing feeling of being ignored
  • Financial stress from inconsistent income
  • Watching others succeed while you feel stuck
  • The nagging sense you're wasting your potential

But what if I told you the problem isn't you - it's the approach?

The fatal flaw in trad niche advice

Most niche advice falls into three flawed categories:

1. "Follow your passion" - Sounds inspiring but ignores market reality

2. "Find a profitable market gap" - Treats you like an interchangeable cog rather than a unique creator

3. "Niche down until it hurts" - Forces you into tiny boxes that stifle creativity

These approaches fail because they miss a crucial truth: your most powerful niche isn't something you discover "out there." It's something you intentionally design based on who you are.

What is a Niche of One?

A Niche of One is a unique category you create that combines your authentic identity, core point of view, and your audience's unmet needs to establish a distinct position only you can own.

Let's break down these components:

Authentic Identity: Your unique combination of experiences, strengths, values, and interests that no one else possesses.

Core Point of View: Your signature belief about your industry or topic - the perspective that challenges assumptions and makes people think differently.

Audience's Unmet Needs: The problems or desires your ideal audience has that aren't being adequately addressed.

Distinct Position: How you differentiate yourself and stand out in the market in a way that makes you irreplaceable.

A Niche of One isn't about limiting yourself to a tiny, hyper-specific audience. It's about creating a clear position that only you can occupy - one that evolves with you as you grow.

The paradox that actually changes everything

Here's the Niche of One paradox that transforms how you approach your creator journey:

The more distinctly YOU your niche becomes, the more irreplaceable you are in the market.

Most creators try to fit into existing categories, hoping to claim a slice of established markets. But the true visionaries - the ones who build lasting, impactful businesses - create entirely new categories.

Consider these creators who've mastered the Niche of One approach:

Ryan Holiday - Modern Stoicism

Ryan didn't invent Stoic philosophy. But he created his Niche of One by making ancient wisdom accessible to modern professionals, entrepreneurs, and athletes.

His distinct position combines his background in marketing, passion for philosophy, and talent for storytelling - all addressing our collective hunger for practical wisdom in a chaotic world.

Marie Forleo - Multi-Passionate Entrepreneurship

Marie created her Niche of One by championing the idea that entrepreneurs don't have to choose just one passion. Her "Multi-passionate Entrepreneur" category gave permission to an underserved audience who felt forced to pick a single path.

Her B-School program serves creators who want businesses that encompass all their interests.

Dr. Maya Shankar - Applied Behavioral Science

While not yet a household name like our other examples, Dr. Shankar has created a powerful Niche of One with her "Slight Change" podcast.

By combining her background as a cognitive scientist, her experience as a White House advisor, and her personal story of pivoting from violin prodigy to scientist after an injury, she's created a unique position examining life's crucial turning points.

She's made behavioral science deeply personal and accessible in a way no one else has.

None of these creators started where they are today. Each began by leveraging their unique background to gain initial traction, then strategically built their Niche of One over time.

The 7 elements of a powerful Niche of One

Through years of research and my own journey building multiple businesses, I've identified seven core elements that make up a successful Niche of One:

  1. Your Messy Life Story:

How your unique experiences shape your perspective and create natural authority. This isn't just your resume—it's the ups, downs, failures and unexpected turns that give you insight others don't have.

  2. Your Anti-Vision:

What you stand against that gives your work purpose and edge. For example, my anti-vision is fighting against cookie-cutter niche advice that leaves creators feeling boxed in and inauthentic.

  3. Your Core Point of View:

The signature belief that makes your message unforgettable. Your perspective should be clear enough to print on a t-shirt, like Marie Forleo's "Everything is figureoutable."

  4. Your Why Story & Authority:

How to use your story to build trust and connection.

  5. Your Niche of One Name:

The power of naming and claiming your unique category.

  6. Your Gateway Offer:

How to monetize your Niche of One authentically.

  7. Your Content Market Fit:

Aligning your content with what your audience truly craves.

These elements form the foundation of my Nicheology methodology - a system I've developed to help creators craft their unique position in the market.

Beyond traditional niching

The most successful creators don't just participate in categories - they create them.

  • Seth Godin didn't just talk about marketing; he created "Permission Marketing."
  • Brené Brown didn't just discuss vulnerability; she defined "Wholehearted Living."
  • Tim Ferriss didn't just write about productivity; he invented the "4-Hour Workweek."

They didn't find these niches - they created them through a unique point of view that challenged assumptions and offered a fresh perspective.

The difference between struggling creators and thriving ones isn't luck, timing, or even talent. It's clarity and conviction about the unique space they occupy.

From niche confusion to niche confidence

Imagine what your creator journey could look like with a perfectly crafted Niche of One:

  • You wake up excited to create, knowing exactly who you're serving and how
  • Your content resonates deeply, building a loyal, engaged audience who feels you're speaking directly to them
  • You're recognized as a trusted authority with a distinct perspective
  • Your income becomes more stable as you attract ideal clients and customers who value your unique approach
  • You feel deeply fulfilled, knowing you're making an impact while staying true to yourself

This isn't just a dream. It's the reality for creators who've mastered the art of creating their Niche of One.

And it's entirely possible for you.

But what about...?

"Won't creating my own niche limit my audience?"

Actually, the opposite is true.

When you try to appeal to everyone, you connect with no one. A clear Niche of One makes your message magnetic to the right people—the ones who will become your most devoted fans and customers.

"What if my interests change over time?"

Your Niche of One isn't a prison; it's a foundation.

The best niches evolve as you do. Think of it as a home base from which you can explore new territories, not a box that confines you.

"I don't have enough expertise yet to create my own niche."

Everyone starts somewhere.

Your unique combination of experiences—even if you're early in your journey—already gives you a perspective no one else has. Your Niche of One can start small and grow with you.
